How to Make Cannabutter | Best Cannabutter Recipe
Cooking with cannabis is a fun way to experience cannabis in its many forms. Making cannabutter isn’t that difficult, but it does take a lot of patience and a bit of know-how to get it just right.
Step 1: Grind Up Your Cannabis
To start things off, use a weed scale to measure out 3.5 grams from a larger container of herb. Or use weed ginder to grind 3.5 grams. Next, put the cannabis into a grinder and turn it into a shake texture. Pretty simple so far!
(NOTE: Feel free to add a little bit more cannabis, or a little bit less, based on how potent you want your butter to be. After going through the process multiple times you’ll have a more solid idea of what dosage suits your needs best. Also, pay attention to the THC level of the strain you’re using; higher THC levels will result in more potent butter).
Step 2:Preheat the oven to 220 degrees Fahrenheit, or about 105 degrees Celsius, place the baking sheet in the oven and heat for 30 minutes.
Step 3:While the weed is decarboxylating, set up the double boiler and warm the butter to degrees Fahrenheit, or about 105 degrees Celsius as well. This will finish decarbing any weed that wasn’t completely converted.
Step 4: Once the weed comes out of the oven, pour it into the melted butter and stir well.
Step 5: Simmer it
The length of time to let the product simmer ranges from 45 minutes to 8 hours. Some people like to slow cook their cannabutter for several hours more, but it can be ready in a shorter time.
The rule of thumb, though, is that the longer we let the cannabis simmer, the more cannabinoids are infused with the butter. In the end, it’s up to preference and convenience how long to continue simmering. But remember to stir it every now and then. At this point, we can see small bubbles starting to form at the surface.
Step 6: Set a sieve over a medium bowl (preferably glass) and line the sieve with cheesecloth. Pour the infusion into the sieve and let it sit until all of the butter has been filtered, about 5 minutes. Wrap the edges of the cheesecloth over the herb and use a rubber spatula to press on the solids to extract all of the butter (discard the solids). Cover the bowl tightly and refrigerate the strained butter for at least 3 hours or overnight.
Step 7: The next day, lift out the solid block of butter and discard any liquid remaining in the bowl. Use a paper towel to pat the surface of the butter on all sides to absorb any droplets of moisture. Wrap the butter in two layers of plastic wrap and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 months or in the freezer for up to 6 months.
Tips for Storing Cannabis Oil, Edibles, and Cannabutter
Do you know how to make edibles without cooking? All you have to do is add your decarboxylated weed to Nutella or peanut butter and leave the mixture in an airtight weed container for a few days. It won’t taste as good as brownies, though!
As edibles such as brownies contain perishable ingredients, you need to consider storage carefully. Options include wrapping them in foil or wax paper and storing them in either an airtight weed container or a Ziplock bag before placing them in your fridge or freezer. Avoid using plastic wrappers because they will negatively impact the flavor and consistency of your beloved edibles.
